Inspect your roof for damaged shingles or flashing and remove debris.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends you take pictures of valuable
possessions and store important documents where they can\'t be damaged.

Know how and when to shut off utilities: Electricity, gas, and water.

Install head and foot bolts on double-entry doors not in use.

If available at the local building supplier or garage door retailer, purchase a
retrofit kit for your garage door.

Shut off appliances at the breaker panel or fuse box. Put freezers, washer, dryers
and other appliances up on wood or cement blocks to keep the motors above the water
level.

Move hazardous materials to higher levels. This includes oil, cleaning supplies,
paint and other unsafe materials.

Find out how to get local warning information, such as outdoor warning sirens or
cable TV override systems.

Plug sinks, and weigh the plugs down with something heavy.

Discuss safe emergency procedures. Teach adults and older children where electric
fuse boxes, water service mains and natural gas mains are and how to turn them off
if necessary.
